What exactly IS bishounen? My firend has a section of her site dedicated to bishounen.

Another thing--they're all guys. Guessing that has somehting to do with it.

A bishounen is a pretty boy. An anime male who's really suave looking. Typically, they have silver hair. Kuja, Sephiroth, and Ghaleon would be RPG bishounen. Malacite from Sailor Moon's another one. Not all have to have silver hair, though. Duo from Gundam Wing would qualify as one, and he has brown hair. Squall, Zell, and Irvine, too. People often (mistakenly) believe that all bishounen are bi or gay, which may be true often, but is not always the case. Fangirls tend to turn them bi or gay in their fanfics/fanart, though, so I see where the misconception could come from.

Actually, the correct definition of bishounen is a pretty YOUNG boy, ALWAYS under the age of eighteen.

I get very irked when I hear people use "Bishounen" as a blanket term to describe any pretty guy, when really, it's a lot like calling a cute guy "babyface." If people are going to use the word Bishounen to describe guys they think are cute, why not learn the other terms so you're using the language correctly?

The other terms:

Biseinen - Used to describe hot men that are older than bishounen. Zechs is a biseinen. Sephiroth is a biseinen.

Duo is a Bishounen.

Bikei - Used to describe sexy people. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this term can apply to women, too. I use this term when describing sexy guys, because I can use it for anyone.

...someone correct me if my Japanese is foggy on Bikei.

Not all fangirls, mind. Just...some. -.- If you go to FF.net, that's almost all you'll find (I've even had people assuming some of my fics would turn out to be yaoi just because they had Kuja in them... *sighs*).

Really? I hadn't heard bishounen was only for younger guys (although, it does make sense, since it's saying "pretty boy," which implies a younger individual). Good to know, though. ^.^

Would this be the same with "bishoujo"? Since that's "pretty girl," is that only for girls under the age of 18?

Yup. It is for a younger girl.

I'm not 100% sure what the terminology for a generic pretty lady is, although I THINK It's Bijou. I'm not too sure.

Bishounen = Pretty boy UNDER 18

Biseinen = Pretty boy OVER 18

Bishoujo = Pretty girl UNDER 18

Bikei = Pretty people in general.

Just wondering, would these be the same thing as saying sexy or hot?

*CD walks up to a very pretty japanese-american and says "Konichiwa bishoujo," with a sly grin on his face, right before he gets a hand across the chops.*

Probably wouldn't say that but you get the picture. The end result is all the same.
